Electrical Technicians troubleshoot, wire, install and repair a wide array of electrical equipment and components in homes and commercial businesses — and doing all of that is no easy task. If you’ve been wondering what it takes to be an electrical technician, then wonder no longer. We’ve compiled a quick list of skills that you can scan to figure out if you’ve got what it takes to be an electrical technician — and remember, you can do anything you put your mind to.
Electrical technicians must:
1. Be able to sniff out a problem and make repairs as necessary. Electrical technicians repair electrical motors, transformers, circuit boards, electrical systems, and more, they use various hand tools while on the job.
2. Know how to install and wire new circuit boards, wiring, switches, motors, transformers, switchboards, and electrical infrastructures, and must follow all electrical and building codes in the process.
3. Know how motors, circuit boards, semiconductors, and transformers function.
4. Test electrical equipment and components after the repair or installation is complete.
5. Have extensive electrical theory and knowledge of applied mathematics.
6. Provide routine maintenance on electrical equipment and components, and have the ability to determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
7. Know how to use a wide range of tools, including a roto-split, reamer, stripping tools, voltage detector, pliers, and more.
8. Know the proper sequence to perform electrical installations.
