It all began early in 1933 as the American Nurses Association declared May 6th through the 12th as the national week to celebrate and elevate the nursing profession. May 12th being the last day and the official National Nurses Day. Why May 12th you may be thinking? Well, Nurses Day was chosen to be on that date because it happens to be Florence Nightingale’s Birthday and she is a pretty big deal! Florence is known as the founder of modern nursing. Throughout that week, an abundance of events occur across the U.S. to honor and thank nurses for the work they do and to educate the public about the role nurses play in healthcare (an important one).

It took a long time to get here, but nurses would probably say it was all worth it! In the US, various hospitals and healthcare agencies prepare their own agenda of events to celebrate Nurses week! From health fairs, to fundraisers, or even preventative screenings, the events are always a huge success!
So back to the original question… It is important to realize the vital role nurses play in the world. Throughout history nurses have moved mountains (or literally crossed them) to get to their patients and take care of them. Nurses today, thankfully do not have to move mountains to reach their patients, but they continue to achieve what they have always done: care for the ill, the injured, the infirm, and the dying. They are the heart of healthcare.
In summary, nurses are kind of a big deal and have a whole week to be celebrated and appreciated.
